WELCOME TO THIS WEEK’S EDITION OF SALIENCE

This week we cover Miami’s response to rising heat, a sea creature’s answer to glue sticks, and man’s new best friend taking on one of our worst jobs. Plus, how companies can float on AIM, and where astronauts can sink to new depths.

You can let us know your thoughts on these stories and any other topics that you would like covered by emailing [email protected]

Miami Heat

While the UK enjoys its hottest few days of the year, officials in Florida are working to curb climate change’s “silent killer”. Miami has become the world’s first city to create a position tasked specifically with tackling the threat of rising heat, and its new Chief Heat Officer hopes other cities worldwide will follow suit.

Feel the heat

Stick around for this one

While industrially produced glue is extremely useful, the use of petroleum in the manufacturing process has proved a sticking point in light of sustainability goals. Thankfully, researchers have developed a non-toxic alternative inspired by the staying power of sea creatures such as barnacles.

Come and sea

AIMing high

London’s junior market has a strong reputation for attracting growth companies looking to go public. Speaking to Growth Business, Neil Shah Director of Research at investment advisory specialist and Sapience client Edison Group, explains how companies can put their best float forward.

Take AIM

Going in depth

Newquay is getting a new pool, but it won’t be open for casual swimmers. Yes, plans have been submitted to build the world’s deepest artificial pool…in Cornwall. Astronauts will be able to train by plunging to depths of up to 50m, presumably without needing 50p for a locker.

Dive deeper

And finally, Excremental growth

This isn’t how we expected the latest robotic revolution to look, but an influx of dog litter during lockdown has prompted researchers to deploy dog-bot Spot to clean up after his living, breathing peers. And as the price of tech continues to fall, this could be a convenient and cost-effective solution for the long term.
