Sustainability Spotlight

Scientists in the US are turning compost on its head and looking to the “rear end” as a new salvation for urban trees. Across a growing number of water treatment plants, investigations have begun into the use of feces and other organic matter found in wastewater to promote growth in urban plants. With 36 million trees lost in US cities each year, the project could offer foliage the vital support it needs to flourish on the lively and vibrant metropolitan scene.

From the bottom up

Everything app

Elon Musk has announced his intention to turn Twitter into an “everything app” days before facing a court battle for attempting to back out of purchasing the company. Behind the somewhat ominous description of “everything app” lies the prescient – if not wholly original – idea of combining instant messaging with mobile payments.

U-turn of the week?

Family resemblances

X-ray scans carried out on a 230-million-year-old fossil have uncovered the first full skeleton of a Triassic reptile known as the Scleronochlus. The fossil belongs to the Elgin collection, and, while no relation to the contentious marbles, scientists now believe that the Scleronochlus is a smaller cousin of the notorious, winged Pterodactyl.

Long-lost relatives

Origin of a new era

This week, London’s Royal Garden Hotel featured in Big Hospitality for the launch of its new restaurant, Origin Kensington. The restaurant’s launch will mark the next step in the journey of the hotel, which earlier this year reopened after major redevelopment.

This week in PR

On our socials this week, we looked at Greenwashing and its significance for your company. With 73% of millennials preferring to shop sustainable, some businesses have turned to providing false or misleading information on their products to attract environmentally-minded consumers.

Caught green-handed

Sapience’s favourite

As increased pumpkin sales and the return of Carrie to prime-time television bespeak, the spookiest month of the year is once again upon us. Queen guitarist Brian May is celebrating October by loaning his collection of “ghost photographs” to the Charles Dickens’ Museum in London. The images, which appear to depict supernatural apparitions, will feature in a new exhibition exploring Dickens’ relationship with the other-worldy. While the photos themselves are certainly macabre, with titles such as “We will shock you” and “Fat-bottomed ghouls”, there’s little doubt that the most frightening thing to emerge from this donation is destined to be the newspaper headlines.
