BAN BOX SHIFTING

Political organisation

Objective

Sapience worked with Ban Box Shifting, an organisation committed to ending unethical business rates avoidance, in order to launch its initial campaign in the media and build its profile as an advocacy organisation.

Activity

Ahead of a press release announcing Ban Box Shifting’s launch to the media, Sapience suggested an open letter to legitimise the campaign. Sapience supported Ban Box Shifting by drafting an open letter to MPs and councillors across the UK, and conducting outreach nationally to gather signatures.

During the outreach, the Government began a consultation on Business Rates Avoidance and Evasion, helping increase exposure of the issue. Through this, Sapience was able to generate discussions with interested MPs and councillors, and kickstart further conversations around business rates avoidance and the practice of box shifting.

Outcome

After collecting over 30 signatures, Sapience reached out to The Times on an exclusive piece on box shifting, with public support from MPs including Fleur Anderson and Sian Berry. The resulting press release saw coverage in publications including Costar, EG and LocalGov.

The campaign also connected Ban Box Shifting’s leader, Shaylesh Patel, with Sian Berry’s ‘London’s Dead Spaces’ movement, with Shaylesh participating in an online roundtable discussion.

Sapience’s efforts helped establish Ban Box Shifting and Shaylesh as leaders in the movement.
